Interview:

Tell us what makes you proud to be a writer from Springville CA? Mainly, I’m happy that there are readers who truly love my books. Because I am now writing two mystery series, I have fans who like by Rocky Bluff P.D. series best and others whose favorite is the Deputy Tempe Crabtree series.

What or who inspired you to become a writer? Since I was a kid, I’ve been writing stories, plays, and articles. Because I’ve always loved reading, I’m sure that’s what inspired me to write.

When did you begin writing with the intention of becoming published? At the age of 10, I wrote a fairy tale and illustrated it and even sent it off to a publisher. I received a kind rejection letter, telling me to try again after I was older. I did, of course, but the first two manuscripts I sent off were rejected and it was quite a few years before I tried again.

Did your environment or upbringing play a major role in your writing and why? Though my mother didn’t encourage my writing, my father thought I could do anything and I’m sure that had a big part in my continuing to write and try to get published. I married young and had five children. My writing for a while was confined to being the editor of the PTA newsletter and writing plays for my Camp Fire Girls to perform. Writing has always been a part of my life in one form or another.

Do you come up with your title (s) before or after you write the manuscript (s)? Sometimes it happens one way and sometimes the other. The title of my latest book, Murder in the Worst Degree was given to me by a friend before I had an idea for the book. I began writing and I was nearly done before I knew how the title would tie into the story. Other times, like Spirit Shapes, the title came from a Native American quote.

Tell us why you write the genre (s) that you write? I’ve written two historical family sagas (first books to be published) based on my own family genealogy and I wanted to fill out the stories, use my imagination and research to figure out why my ancestors moved where they did. Because I was reading both mysteries and horror, I began writing both. One of my favorites, Lingering Spirit, ( a romance with a touch of the supernatural) is based on something that happened in our family.

Tell us your most rewarding experience while in the writing process? When everything is moving along well and the story is following from my mind, through my fingers onto the computer keys so fast I can hardly keep up-and I know exactly what’s going to happen next and why.

Tell us your most negative experience while in the writing process? When I’m stuck, and don’t know exactly where the plot needs to go next. However, this never lasts long as the characters nudge me and I keep on writing until I get it wrote.

Tell us your most rewarding experience in your publishing journey? Knowing that I no longer have to go through the query process to get my next book published. Both of my publishers are ready to accept the next book in the series when I have it ready. It will still have to go through the editing process and possibly some changes made, but I don’t have to go through all that waiting and wondering any longer.

Tell us your most negative experience in your publishing journey? Through the years I’ve had some publishers who were not honest. In each case, I had a hard time believing that this was the case. And once I had a prominent agent who I thought was working for me, when in reality she wasn’t send my manuscripts anywhere. That’s why I’ve never worked with an agent since.

What one positive piece of advice would you give to other authors? There are so many ways to get published these days, find the way that suits you best. But no matter how you decide to go, always get your book edited before submitting to a publisher or self-publishing.

Who Is Your Favorite Author(s)? I have so many that I can’t possible list them all. Many of my favorites are small-press authors like me.

Interview:

What makes you proud to be a writer from Austin, TX? Austin has an absolutely incredible and supportive arts community. There’s an openness and appreciation for so many different mediums here.

What or who inspired you to become a writer? My mom. She’s the one who instilled a love of reading and literature in me. She’s the one who taught me to find the bliss within the pages. From there, writing I suppose was a natural progression.

When did you begin writing with the intention of becoming published? When I was twelve. Though I was in my mid thirties before I believed that what my characters had to say had validity.

Did your environment or upbringing play a major role in your writing and why? Absolutely. My mother was an English teacher who instilled in me a love of literature and the myriad worlds that could be mine if I only dared to believe and open my mind! I grew up with a family that cherished education and imaginative expansion.

Do you come up with your title (s) before or after you write the manuscript (s)? Usually the ‘logline’ holds the title. I also write screenplays, so once I have the concept, a working title comes relatively quickly.

Tell us why you write the genre (s) that you write? I like things a little spicy so work mostly with Thrillers and Supernatural themes. I tend to think of genres as ingredients in a recipe, so I love mixing and blending their elements in the hopes of creating a unique flavor to my particular story telling voice. Also, exploring human behavior in relationships is utterly fascinating and employing multiple genres gives a far more well-rounded view of a character and how they interact with the world on different levels and under different circumstances.

Tell us your most rewarding experience while in the writing process? The moment when you know your characters will prevail in spite of, AND because of whom their experiences have made them.

Tell us your most negative experience while in the writing process? The doubt. As a writer there is horrific doubt, are the characters real enough? Is the story compelling? Are the voices individual enough and the motivations true? Is everyone being true to who they are? Is the story cohesive? (I could go on… but let’s not.)

Tell us your most rewarding experience in your publishing journey? The day a client told me she was going to start a small press so that she could put my works out there in the world. She believed in me so much that she started a press geared toward getting new authors with unique voices a chance to be read.

Tell us your most negative experience in your publishing journey? Form rejections. I have a file cabinet full of them. They hurt, deeply.

What one positive piece of advice would you give to other authors? If writing is what you love, don’t ever stop. Learn from others, how to run a business, learn to network. (I don’t mean slamming the keys at the local coffee shop… meet people, join writers groups. You will suck many lemons before you find the right people to work and grow with but when you do, it’ll all be worth it.).

Who is your favorite author? The first author who made me pursue her works was Marguerite Henry.

Wednesday’s Child (First – Freedom Fighter Series)

What Format (s) are your books in? Print and e-book both of course! Something for everyone!

What special projects are you working on now and what books do we have to look forward to in the future?

I’m currently working on The Fourth Tier; Heroes of the Line Book 4, Nick, Frank and the rest of the surviving Heroes of the Line are split between worlds, each trying to plug the inter-universal leakage that’s letting both Schades and their allies, The Living Dark into our universe in the hopes of banishing light from both realms and taking them over.

There are two other projects I’m focusing on heavily, one is called Avalon – While en route to the penal colony PEX with re-captured fugitive Serian Nine; Commander Ava London’s shuttle crosses paths with a mythological entity that lives within the interstitial realm between universes. The catastrophic collision sends all three parties back through time to current day earth with both Serian and the creature lucky enough to escape the Commander’s custody, only to be unleashed on a population that couldn’t begin to understand the origins of the carnage about to be brought down on it.

And the other is called – In The Name of God – Rick Strainge wanted to die, but while in that land between life and death, faced with the consequences of his self-destructive act, begs for a chance to put off the inevitable. His prayers are answered by a warrior angel who recruits him into God’s Army in an effort to destroy the rising tide of vessels whose only goal is to set Lucifer free from hell. With Pastor Lou Carpenter as his guide, Rick embarks on a journey that will challenge everything he ever thought he knew about good and evil, and the eternal dance between the two forces when his own daughter is revealed to be one of the vessels he must destroy.

Is there anything else that you would like to share with us? Yes. Please, if you love to write do it! Invest in an editor, one you can meet with face to face. Believe in your voice BUT… understand your market. Do you have a point? If so, stick with it. Do you want to be the next Rowling? Meyers? Koontz? Learn the art and structure of story then as you write consider both the market and yourself. It can be a beautiful compromise! Just understand what you want and why.

Book Spotlight – A Cupboardful Of Shoes And Other Stories – by Colin A. Wright

A-Cupboardful-Of-Shoes-by-A.-Colin-Wright

After a life dedicated to the study of languages, A. Colin Wright has distilled his life’s observations into this engaging collection of short stories, most of which have been previously published in literary journals. Now retired, his life’s adventures, which include serving in the British Air Force, attending Cambridge University, and being a professor of Russian, have inspired this collection. “I’m a librarian and I kissed a film star once. I touched her nipples too. At least, I think I did.” So begins “Queen’s Grill.” Horatio Humphries, one of the unreliable narrators, strikes up a brief friendship with a movie star on a rough Atlantic crossing, but his “twin” brother doesn’t believe him. In “A Pregnant Woman with Parcels at Brock and Bagot,” an unnamed woman may or may not have an affair with a man she met at a party-depending on whether she can get by a woman in front of her. “Distantly from Gardens,” a variant on the theme of the “double” found often in Russian literature, presents a man with a split personality, inhabited by two narrators who are his past as well as his present. While other stories are told in either the first or third person, the subject here demands the use of the second. The stories in A Cupboardful of Shoes explore subjects as wide-ranging as largely disappointed love, violence, and war, sometimes with an underlying religious theme, serving to illustrate Wright’s eclectic style and literary interests.

*************************

Tell us what makes you proud to be a writer from Kingston, Ontario, Canada? Canadian literature is of course well known, but I’d regard myself as a British and international writer rather than just a Canadian one. I was born in Chelmsford, Essex, England. After serving as a linguist in the British Royal Air Force (learning Russian), I attended Cambridge University, where I earned M.A and Ph.D degrees. In 1962 I lived for six months in Sassari, Sardinia, followed the next year by a longer period in Reggio Calabria. I speak five languages reasonably fluently, and can stumble along in two more. In 1964, after a year’s study at the Herzen Pedagogical Institute in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), I was appointed professor of Russian at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. I remained at Queen’s until retirement in 1999 and still reside in Kingston. I am married and have two grown sons.

What or who inspired you to become a writer? My French/German teacher at school in England, who subsequently became a writer of detective novels.

When did you begin writing with the intention of becoming published? At a relatively early age, I read a book on English history from the local children’s library. I decided to dramatize the kings of England, using paper cut-outs as puppets. The project didn’t get very far, but I still have a few pages of elementary dialogue, such as William II dying by an arrow in the New Forest, with him falling off his horse and saying “Oh blow! It was in 1956 that I began writing with the intension of being published, but I wasn’t first published until 1967.

Did your environment or upbringing play a major role in your writing and why? Encouraged by a teacher at grammar school in England, I just wanted to write, trying short stories — which were so terrible that I haven’t the courage to reread them. I studied French, German and Russian, which included their literatures, at Cambridge University and then taught Russian Language and Literature at Queen’s University (Kingston, Ontario, Canada) for 35 years. I’ve always regarded literature as a serious activity which should challenge readers; thus I dislike post-modernism and simple stories about everyday life, particularly if there’s not much plot. Then, when I was teaching at University, I published academic articles on Russian and comparative literature, including a major book on Mikhail Bulgakov. But I still wrote novels, short stories and plays.

Do you come up with your title (s) before or after you write the manuscript (s)? Depends. With my current novel, Sardinian Silver, the title really suggested itself: the name of an actual wine which seemed appropriate symbolically.

Tell us why you write the genre (s) that you write? Well I have written academic works (many articles and a major book published by University of Toronto Press, Mikhail Bulgakov; Life and Interpretations.) I’ve published about twenty short stories, written novels and plays (some performed locally). In fact I think I’ve written everything–even some journalism–except poetry, which I don’t relate to. Basically I choose whatever genre seems most appropriate.

Tell us your most rewarding experience while in the writing process? Crafting something into good writing.

Tell us your most negative experience while in the writing process? Writer’s block, which I’ve been suffering from for a while now.

Tell us your most rewarding experience in your publishing journey? Having things appreciated by an audience.

Tell us your most negative experience in your publishing journey? Sending out endless query letters to no avail.

What one positive piece of advice would you give to other authors? Just keep at it if you’re sure you want that, but be sure that you do.

Who Is Your Favorite Author? Mikhail Bulgakov, who was my main academic research interest. I regard his ‘The Master and Margarita’ as the greatest book of the twentieth century.

Published Books: Sardinian Silver, Mikhail Bulgakov: Life and Interpretations, and A Cupboard Full Of Shoes.

Timothy SawyerThrough my writings, it is my goal and sincere wish to tell people that they are not alone in their suffering. Depression is so widespread, especially in these times; there are people that don’t even know that they are suffering from it. If one life can be changed for the better from my books, then my goal has been fulfilled.

I am not a mental health professional. I am not an ordained minister, nor do I have any degrees in theology. My background is in Information Technology. In essence, I am just a man who wants to share part of his story with the rest of the world in hopes that through my book we can form some sort of connection, and if necessary seek help because of that connection.

A life saved or a life changed for the better because of my writings is worth so much more than a royalty payment.
